In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Herring. Survivors include his wife, Joyce two sons, Seth Newton and wife, Angie, and Philip Newton five grandchildren, Colton Newton, Brooke Newton, Meredith Newton, Caroline Newton, and Luke Newton and sister, Phyllis Gumm. Along with serving his community as a firefighter, Retired Chief Newton was a previous Town Councilman for the Town of Swepsonville and was still involved in the community that he so loved. He served within the fire department including Fire Chief, Board of Director, Treasurer, Secretary, but mostly the man that everyone looked up to and went to for just the right answer. Retired Chief Newton was still actively involved within the organization. Retired Chief Darrell Newton started his fire service career in 1959 with the Swepsonville Fire Department and began his tenure as chief in 1968 until he semi-retired as Fire Chief in 2004. Darrell was the owner/operator of Newton’s Fire & Safety, Swepsonville, NC. “Red” Newton and Alma Faucette Newton, both deceased. Anyone who knew William knew his hobbies to be woodworking as well as antiquing and selling furniture he restored.
He also served on the Alumni Board of Hargrave Military Academy and was named “Outstanding Alumnus” for his leadership and hard work on the school’s Yesteryear Hall. While busy with work, William also volunteered throughout his life with various organizations, such as Kiwanis Club and the Piedmont Chapter of US Green Building Council. After many years of working, William retired from GTCC where he was Capital Projects Coordinator, but, being a man that always searched for the next project, he worked for Stock Building and Supply for a short period during post-retirement. They also built the Kenmore Museum, further highlighting the capabilities of this father-son duo. George’s Episcopal Church, and the restoration of Martha Washington’s home, Kenmore. This family business was well known within the area, so much so that they were entrusted to complete various prestigious projects, such as the restoration of Gunston Hall where US Founding Father George Mason lived, the restoration of St. Newton & Son Builders,” in Fredericksburg, VA for 2 decades. He spent his lifetime in the Construction industry, working alongside his father and mentor in the family business, “William J. He was also a Certified Building/Energy Inspector through Building Performance Institute.
After Hargrave, William attended Bridgewater College on a football scholarship, the University of Virginia, Guilford Technical Community College, and NC State University where he received a diploma in Green Building Construction. William had the privilege to attend Hargrave Military Academy at the age of 11 where he was known as “Fig.” Along with his time playing football, baseball, and running track, William also gained a brotherhood of friends from Hargrave that he maintained throughout his life. He was happily married to his soulmate, Terri Culler, of High Point, NC at the time of his passing, and they were blessed to enjoy 21 special years of marriage. He was born in Fredericksburg, VA to the late William “Jeff” Sr. was welcomed into heaven on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Randolph Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.
